Chalet Tropicale
A Contemporary Expression of Tropical Living, Rooted in History
Historic Spring Garden, Miami, Florida
CHALET TROPICALE is a thoughtful residential development in Spring Garden, one of Miami’s oldest and most distinctive historic neighborhoods. Rooted in a deep appreciation for its surroundings, the project explores the relationship between architectural preservation, contemporary living, and the natural tropical landscape.
Rather than replace the existing historic cottage, the design preserves its defining architectural elements and introduces a compact, two-story masonry residence at the rear of the property. This sensitive approach maintains the character of the historic streetscape while creating a new architectural dialogue between old and new. At the heart of the composition, a landscaped terrace forms a shaded outdoor living space, connecting both structures and creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor environments. Designed in response to Miami’s tropical climate, the new residence embraces durable materials, generous ceiling heights, ample natural light, and carefully positioned openings that encourage cross ventilation. Deep overhangs, shaded thresholds, and expansive windows establish a strong connection to the surrounding vegetation while providing protection from the sun and rain.
Every design decision reflects a commitment to simplicity, functionality, and contextual sensitivity. By balancing traditional architectural principles with contemporary design, Chalet Tropicale demonstrates how thoughtful development can preserve neighborhood identity while accommodating the evolving needs of modern living. The result is a residence that honors its history, embraces its tropical setting, and offers a timeless interpretation of contemporary Miami living — a place where architecture, landscape, and heritage coexist in harmony.
